  17. <p>    Nice guys may not finish last, but it's hard for them to
  18. stay in first." Thus spake NBC Today show host Bryant Gumbel,
  19. recommending tough action against his associates in a
  20. confidential memo leaked to New York Newsday last week. The
  21. scathing four-page missive, written last fall to Today
  22. executive producer Marty Ryan, trashed fellow staffers Gene
  23. Shalit (whose movie reviews "are often late" and whose
  24. "interviews aren't very good") and consumer reporter David
  25. Horowitz ("a walking cliche"). But the heaviest artillery was
  26. saved for resident jester and weatherman Willard Scott, who,
  27. wrote Gumbel, "holds the show hostage to his assortment of
  28. whims, wishes, birthdays and bad taste. This guy is killing us
  29. and no one's even trying to rein him in." He suggested cutting
  30. down the weatherman's appearances and "nuking" the assistant who
  31. comes up with some of Scott's material. On TV, Scott joked about
  32. the developing soap opera and called the vacationing host "J.R.
  33. Gumbel." But off the air, the weatherman said, "I'm absolutely
  34. distraught." A USA Today call-in poll provided some comfort:
  35. Scott fans trounced detractors 27,300 to 854. Gumbel's memo made
  36. no mention of co-host Jane Pauley. A mere oversight?
